ABSTRACT
One of the oldest professions is mensor which later was termed as agrimensor. He was
a surveyor with mathematical, geological and measure knowledge. Because of his education
he was included in the social elite, especially in the province in ancient times. Agrimensores
could be civil servants in the army or civil servant to the cities’ menagers. Their task was
laying out military camps whether the foundation of the city, including the laying out
of streets. They could also perform their profession as independent professionals. According
to the surviving sources, it seems that they had to comply with certain laws and ethical
standards. Then this figure can be ascribed to a professional prototype of today's surveyor
