Udowodniono w badaniach dodatni wpływ psychoterapii poznawczo–behawioralnej na redukcję recydywizmu u nieletnich przestępców. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie poznawczo-behawioralnych oddziaływań terapeutycznych, które wpływają na redukcję przestępczości wśród nieletnich. Statystyki pokazują, że większość z młodocianych przestępców ma różnego typu zaburzenia, takie jak: zaburzenia z deficytem uwagi i nadaktywnością, postać z przewagą nadruchliwości i impulsywności, zaburzenie opozycyjno-buntownicze i zaburzenia zachowania. W celu zmiany zachowania młodocianych przestępców konieczne jest stosowanie psychoterapii. Psychoterapia wpływa nie tylko na zmianę zachowania, ale również na zmianę poznawczą i emocjonalną. Nieletni przestępcy mają również deficyty umiejętności społecznych, rozumiane jako: nieumiejętność adaptacyjnego, zgodnego z normami społecznymi, radzenia sobie w wielu sytuacjach społecznych. Ta praca pokazuje, w jaki sposób praktycznie pomóc nieletnim osadzonym w wyrównaniu deficytów poznawczych, emocjonalnych, behawioralnych w celu zapobiegania zachowaniom przestępczym w przyszłości. Przedstawiono techniki poznawcze i behawioralne pracy z nieletnimi przestępcami. Badania wskazują na obniżenie wskaźnika przestępczości wśród nieletnich poddawanych psychoterapii poznawczo-behawioralnej. W proponowanym poznawczo-behawioralnym programie terapeutycznym nieletni przestępcy pracują nad: poprawą umiejętności społecznych, nad konstruktywnym rozwiązywaniem problemów, nad zmianami w sferze poznawczej, nad samokontrolą, nad kontrolą impulsywnych zachowań, a także nad poczuciem własnej wartości.
